What makes GameOn! A good team-building experience?
If we use Tuckman’s theory as our foundation for defining what a successful team constitutes, then we can assess our activity step by step.
-Forming: Upon arrival, we will split your party into 2 teams. This is the formation of teams. This sub-grouping allows for unusual mixing of different personnel that may not usually work together, and in the case that they ever would work together on future projects, they would be already familiarized with one another.
-Storming: At the beginning of each different game we play through there will be a new set of rules that will build excitement and create conversation. A good example would be one of our games: Survey Squabble, may trigger fun memories amongst players that could spur new conversations amongst players that usually don’t normally converse, or have had weak interactions previously. In the case that someone doesn’t understand the rules, they will look for leadership to clarify the rules for them. This grants an opportunity for leadership to emerge.
-Norming: This is really where we shine. This is true “team-building.” The rules have been set, and the players begin to cooperate with each other and help solve problems to achieve victory. We nourish and encourage collaboration amongst each team so it is essential to winning. The teams begin to become acclimated with each other and start to learn of their strengths/weaknesses.
-Performing: By the end of Whirly Words, each team will know who their super-solvers (ones that solve hangman-style puzzles very fast) are and looked to for advice. There is also opportunity for specializations to emerge depending on each topic. I.e. one player my be supreme at guessing destinations, while another player may be very knowledgeable at guessing movie titles. Although these talents may not be the desired traits in your next project, it does establish a level of confidence and trust in each other, as well as supporting each other in personal failures. (Such as incorrectly guessing an answer!)
-Adjourning: At the end of the show, we celebrate the winning team, and the teams disband. Normally there will be a brief sense of mourning, but in this case, they will return to their work space excited about the adventure they just went on together and even the defeated team will band together in their time of loss and bear the mark of the underdogs, inspired for the next task together to succeed. “However, having positive shared experiences will make it easier if you work with some of these people again.”
So, from this perspective, you can see plenty of opportunity for specialization, skill-blending, inter-mingling of backgrounds, and opportunities for leadership emergence all in a 2-hour window for less than $50 per person!
So come on down! What have you got to lose??
